Since the end of the season, we have been busy working on a number of items that are important to all of our OYHA families.
After considering feedback from our coaches, review of prior years’ teams, discussion amongst current and former coaches board members, and giving consideration of what team structures most closely align to our stated philosophy at OYHA which is “to promote the growth and development of players in a fun, fair, and safe environment that maximizes player participation and skill development at all levels while also developing sportsmanship, teamwork, and self-confidence”, we are pleased to share the planned teams for each level for the upcoming season.*
*Subject to changes based on final registration numbers
It’s important to note that communication about the Orono-Westonka Girls Hockey Program will be delivered via the Orono-Westonka Girls Hockey Website and emails.
While there is still plenty of work to do, we are very excited to provide you with the preseason clinic and preseason evaluations (aka tryouts) schedule for the 2017-2018 season. We have worked hard to be respectful and cognizant of potential conflicts with MEA week, Orono Youth Football, Orono Youth Lacrosse, High School Football, High School Soccer as well as requests from the Mound Westonka Hockey Association whom we are once again, thrilled to be partnering with to make our respective girls programs as strong as possible.
There may need to be some adjustments along the way, but we are hopeful that the work we have done in the first part of the summer will provide you with some timely insight into the first part of the season so you can plan accordingly! We have also worked hard to shorten the time frame for our evaluations and we hope you like what you see.
We will again be providing goaltending clinics for the entire 2017-2018 season and have contracted with Attitude Goaltending once again this year. Pete Samargia and his staff have made a commitment to our association to develop our existing goaltenders, but perhaps as importantly, help us find and develop the goaltenders for the future of our association. Our goaltending clinics will be held on Sunday AFTERNOONS and we will be holding our coaches for each team accountable to making sure their goalies are attending these sessions, but as importantly, we will be asking each team to make sure at least one coach is on the ice at these clinics. The reason is simple… Pete and his staff want to coach the coaches. Our belief is that if we can get our coaches more education about the position, and provide them with tools to help our goaltenders during the course of the season. This is a win-win-win for everyone involved. Our coaches get better, our goaltenders will get the training they need, and our teams will all benefit!!
In addition to having Attitude Goaltending running our skills clinics, we have also come to an agreement with The Goal Crease (aka Stauber) to provide our Orono Goaltenders with four (4) sessions for a reduced price of only $50 per session for our members!
Regarding our skills clinics for our players, these will be held on Monday evenings and is part of the overall curriculum of our association. We are very excited to announce that Troy Stevens will be returning this year to run our Monday Skills nights again! Our goaltenders are all asked to attend with their teams, as Pete Samargia will have someone from his staff on the ice during these sessions as well. These sessions are going to be designed to help our players become better individual players, who can then take their improved skills and apply them to the team game!
We are in the process of finalizing our coaches for the upcoming season and we expect to be able to announce our A-level coaches before Labor Day. Additionally, we are in putting the finishing touches on our tournament schedule which will be finalized this month!
Respect The Spartan!
